Wow! The band was firing on all cylinders at Furthur's opening night at the Tower Theatre on 3/18/2011. I can't recall the last time I witnessed such joy and animation from the band. Phil was actually giggling several times during the performance, and JK was hopping and skipping around!
Continuing their trend of adding something special and unique to each show, the band played Rosemary in Set 2, sung by Phil. This song, which debuted on the Dead's Aoxomoxoa album in 1969, was only performed live by the Dead once (12/7/68 Bellarmine College; Louisville, KY). Furthur played it once before (5/30/10 Calaveras County Fairground; Angels Camp, CA) and Phil & Friends played it a few times. The crowd was conspicuously quiet during the song's performance, likely due to both the sorrowful nature of the song as well as general unfamiliarity with it. Still, it was a treat, and led into a titillating version of Morning Dew.
This was my first show on this current tour, and I can't imagine a better jump start. Obviously, I am eagerly awaiting tonight, though admittedly, my body is a bit sore.
