There's actually a lot to like in Phish. I think one of the problems people have with them is that there's a lot fewer entry points for the casual listener. I've always been a major Zappa fan so when I first got turned onto them in the early 90s it wasn't that much of a stretch. But I understand that it can be a hard sound to get one's head around.

That's the same issue I have with Phish: great instrumentals, but weak lyrics/song writing.

Well, here's a cover though I wish it was a little less obvious. They seem to have the same problem as a lot of jam bands. Good chops but indistinct material.
