It was sweet to hear Govt Mule at a nice smaller outdoor venue with spectacular sound. It was as if the hot evening sun ignited the hot jams on the stage at Meijer Gardens. The first set featured only six songs. A short set, one would imagine? Nope. There was plenty of jammed out soul-deep power blues capped by a cooking instrumental, “Kind of Bird” co-written by Warren and Dickey Betts.

After a short break, (this time it really was a short break) as the sun set behind the trees, the Mule kicked out the “lots more music” that Warren promised before the break. The night before in Milwaukee, the they played some covers by the Beatles and the Band. Tonight it would be Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Slackjaw Jezebel started off the set that included “When the Levee Breaks” and a wailing Hendrix take of “Catfish Blues”. Then came another immense, grinding power ballad: Creedence classic, “Effigy” was wrapped around a jam that included “Hey Joe” and some instrumental “Folsom Prison Blues” (which seemed to be the tune most recognized by the crowd).

For the encore, Warren brought out Chicago guitarist Donald Kinsey of the Kinsey Report. The two treated us to blistering guitar dialogues on “I feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” and the Little Milton song that the Jerry Garcia Band regularly played, “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”. That was well worth missing Soulshine for an encore.

Thanks for the review. I'm seeing the Mule tonight. Unfortunately, I will miss the first part of the Furthur show.
But live music beats streamed. Besides, I'll probably be back before the end of the first set.!
I'll try and get a setlist. No promises.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.
I can't come down, I've been set free.
Who you are, and what you do,
don't make no difference to me.
