wow, tough question. since there were no advertised guildelines, i assume that non-living bands/musicians count as well as those still alive.

one of my favorite bands that could never ever be considered anywhere close to a hippy band is the Melvins. i absolutely love 'em!!!

three of my favorite non-living, non-hippy musicians are Django Reindardt, Johnny Cash and Danny Gatton.

and two of my favorite living non-hippy musicians are Ry Cooder and Jeff Beck.

i can think of many others, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

What about bands that don't exist anymore. I really liked some of the "post-rock" stuff out of Chicago like June of '44. Also a bay area band I believe, Bardo Pond I really loved, they may still be around I think.

Can't pick one favorite

Several, including, in no particular order

Pink Floyd
Rolling Stones
NIN
Tool
Metallica
Steely Dan
Rush
Yes
Talking Heads
Prince

I could go on for a while.

Lots of good music exists outside the jam band scene.
Any while none of them provide the same energy, or variety in their live shows as a band like Furthur, they still provide a special feeling that only good music can provide.

I think I would rather be blind than deaf.
Takin' it in stride!

Imma start off with the best of the best; BEETHOVEN!!!!
and the rest:

Tool (yeah Strider you know what's up!)

Steel Pulse (Sweet sweet reggae with some killer guitar work)

Regina Spektor (Oh my god this lady can do no wrong, beautiful in every way possible)

Beck (Jeff too but just Beck, you know the, 'I'm a loser' one)

Sublime (my girl got ripped apart for sportin her Sublime shirt on NYE and we just smiled, smiled, smiled

Mike Oldfield (Tubular bells = ohhhhhh my Goddddd!!!!)

Cake (cause everyone need the truth wrapped in a heavy layer of sarcastic humor)

Joe Walsh (was he a hippie? I dunno but the man can make a guitar gently weep just as easily as make it scream in horror)

Nirvana (what can I say, I was a pissed off little teenager once myself)

Buddy Guy (Stanky)

Mr. Stevie Ray Vaughn ( no comment, just listen to him, there's nothing more to say)

Tchaikovsky (Overture of 1812, c'mon)

And my favorite Band of all The Band (Danko, Manuel, Hudson, Helms, and Robertson, guess you can call em hippie music, a buddy of mine put it good when he said they're like the Civil War on Acid)
Warrior for Peace and The Positive Movement!

One of my favorite singer-songwriters is Elliott Smith. His lyrics can be depressing and angry at times, but man can that guy write some gorgeous melodies! And what a voice!!

Yikes! I guess its time to admit it... lol

As you can see the band has played with Bobby back in 1999 and back in 2003 Bobby invited the keyboardist Taylor to sit in on a few songs with Ratdog!
