Re: Favorite Dead era?#187847 2 years agoWell the short answer is all eras - there's something to like about all the years, especially since some tunes were only played in certain eras.
Wel you asked so the long answer is
All the Pigpen years....
I dig the 66-67 stuff.
The 68-69 era with the material like Live / Dead, I also especially like 70, 71, and 72.
1970 had some real aggressive playing by Bobby and he was up in the mix too.
1971, with the Spring run by the Quintet that produced Skull and Roses, is a personal fave.
1972 was 72, what needs to be said?
Most of the Keith and Donna years....
73-74 was awesome, I like the 2nd set type of stuff, the PITB's, the Dark Stars, Eyes, etc. I'm not too fond of the 73-74 1st set songs, I feel like they kind of drag a little with slow tempos.
The 76-78 era produced great shows, great song selection, heartfelt Jerry ballads, and very rocking moments, etc, but it's not a favorite of mine. Donna was often very off key with the background vocals and it seems to annoy me now more than ever. I'm sure someone, somewhere, will read this and will wonder how I'm not raving about 77, with the truly epic May tour. It's not that I don't like these years, it's just they could have been so much better if Donna could hear herself on stage and sing in key. She certainly sang Sunrise very well so it was only as background vocalist that there was a problem. Keith also sounds like he was in a musical rut at times. Really great years - but not my favorite years!!
All the Brent years....
79-82 was the era of Brent's new influence. Many have said that he didn't fit in right away but I disagree. The Fall 79 stuff is epic, the Philly 11-79 show they released for example. I think this is an under-hyped era, with the great Radio City/Warfield runs, the Europe 81 tour, the truly awesome Oops shows etc. Very happening JGB shows 81-82 too.
83-84 another under-hyped era. Some great shows, fast tempos on some of the stuff. Spring 84 tour which I saw much too little of.
85 is a year of its own with a great summer tour and unusual song breakouts
87 especially the Fall with the GD tour, and the JGB Broadway run
89-90 was the Dead's renaissance. The Warlocks show. The Fall 89 and Spring 90 tours, the September MSG shows, the Europe tour...
Some of the Vince years....
91-95 while not the greatest, had some grate stuff, new tunes, etc. Vince's tone was a bit cheesy but his playing was good. Jerry was doing some of the ballads with more emotion then ever; Visions of Johanna, Black Peter etcThese are the good old days!!

Re: Favorite Dead era?#188441 2 years ago89-90
Really every era I love but not the biggest fan of 92-95 but i do own some good bootlegs 10-31-94 comes to mind. but my favorite is 89-90. Also love post dead era starting from 04 till now. Right now every1 on fire Furthur is my favorite band touring of course but Phil and Friends are killin it, Bobby solo shows are great(cant wait for philly less then 2 weeks), 7 Walkers are very very tight and i hear great things about the Micky Hart Band. Over the last 3 or so years there been a TON of great music. Even what bob doin at TRI is great and I heard some smokin shows from Terrapin Crossings.
