Looking for New Orleans music suggestions

#138475 2 years ago
I realize this is not a terribly serious dilemma but the Jazz Fest Cubes just came out today and I could use some suggestions on who to see, especially in the earlier part of the days. Anyone familiar with NOLA and the local music scene there enough to provide some seasoned guidance? I'll be there all but 4/27.

I'm very familiar with NOLA, been to five JazzFests. So here's some suggestions:

4/28: Walter "Wolfman" Washington

4/29: Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
Sonny Landreth
Cowboy Mouth
Tab Benoit

5/3: George Porter, Jr. & Runnin' Pardners
Dirty Dozen Brass Band
James Cotton "Superharp" Band

5/4: Marcia Ball
Deacon John
Mavis Staples
Bunny Wailer (Actually Jamaican, not NOLA. Founded the group The Wailers with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.)

5/5: Allen Toussant
Irma Thomas
Preservation Hall Jazz Band

5/6: Kermit Ruffins & The Barbecue Swingers
funky Meters
Terrence Simien & The Zydeco Experience
Neville Brothers (Of course.)

Hope this helps. Have a blast and stay safe!

Cool I marked up similar stuff on the cubes but sometimes you just get distracted.
Know what is going on and then be open to other possibilities - that is my philosophy.

Really looking forward to Levon Helm Band w/ Mavis Staples

I believe Larry Campbell is still playing with Levon so I wonder if Teresa Williams will come out to sing with Mavis.

That would be a treat!
Mavis Staples is also touring with Bonnie Raitt this fall.

Thaat would be a nice combo. It's much better when Bonnie's playing with a real roots artist, like Taj Mahal who I saw her with about three years ago. Keeps her away from the light and focused on what she does best.

How about Dr. John at Tipitina's on 4/28.

His new album (Locked Down) is produced by Dan Auerbach from Black Keys and it's a got a great throwback swampy funky voodoo groove going - hopefully he'll bring some of that energy to the show.

Have a blast - laissez les bon temps roulez!

Also, you can never go wrong hitting up the Gospel Tent or Fais do do stages (esp early in the day) - some of the coolest most memorable and inspired music I've heard down there was by groups I'd never heard of before or since, totally indigenous deeply rooted straight from the spirit stuff.
