'Wizard Of Oz' Munchkin Karl Slover Dies
November 16th, 2011 8:41am EST

"Karl SloverThe Wizard Of Oz star Karl Slover has died at the age of 93.

Slover, one of the last surviving actors who played Munchkins in the 1939 film, passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest in an Atlanta, Georgia hospital on Tuesday.

The actor, who had pituitary dwarfism, appeared in several films throughout his career but is best known for playing the lead trumpeter in The Wizard Of Oz's Munchkins band.

He regularly appeared at promotional events related to the movie after his retirement.

John Fricke, author of the book 100 Years of Oz, says, "Of the 124 little people, he's one of the handful who got to enjoy this latter-day fame, to have people know who he was and be able to pick him out of the crowd in the movie."

Only three other actors who played Munchkins are still alive, according to the Associated Press."

Lollypop Guild:

"We represent the Lullaby League, The Lullaby League, The Lullaby League

And in the name of the Lullaby League,

We wish to welcome you to Munchkinland.

We represent the Lollypop Guild, The Lollypop Guild, The Lollypop Guild

And in the name of the Lollypop Guild,

We wish to welcome you to Muchkinland.

We welcome you to Munchkinland, Tra la la la la la la

From now on you'll be history.

You'll be history, you'll be history, you'll be history.

And we will glorify your name.

You will be a bust, be a bust, be a bust

In the Hall of Fame!"

I remember how this used to turn up on TV around Thanksgiving. Wonder if it's on this year?

"No!"
"Got any flies?"

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow"
music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Anyone know if theres any truth to the story of the munchkin who suposedly hung himself during the making of the movie, which apparently can be seen way in the backround on the original film?

The suicide rumor is fake. Lots of things wrong with it, including the fact that the "hanging" scene was filmed before any munchkins arrived at MGM Studios. I took a cinematography class in college and our nutty professor was fascinated by this film. We spent days studying it, including that rumor.

Two good things about that class for me.... 2 very ez college credits.

I learned that at some point during the movie Poltergeist (ET ??) you can briefly hear them playing excerpts from the musical score of the wizard of oz (which was kind of cool).

Plenty more on youtube

Yeah, I did it once. And it works. But the band swears it was never done intentionally. I think it's coincedence. But cool.
