what are some 'must have' GD shows?

#61052 2 years, 11 months ago
what shows do you consider essential in your (or any) Grateful Dead collection?

I'll start it with this one ...... 6/23/74

www.archive.org/details/gd74-06-23.sbd.cribbs.16780.sbeok.shnf

whole show smokes - maybe the best U.S. Blues ever (?)

If you have the tapers compendium. They have a good list of shows for each dead year that are worth listening to for quality of sound and quality of show. Of course 5/8/77 is a must have.

There's a run of shows in may of 77 in which the band was on fire. In particular, 5/5-5/9/77. I also really like the whole 89 Alpine run.
And the 87, 88, 89 MSG runs were really hot. There are some amazing shows from 68-69, but I'm not as familiar with that era, to name
specific shows. I gotta say, part of the fun is in the search. : )

So many, but Nassau Coliseum with Branford Marsallas is amazing show for the more modern era (it made it to without a net... that eyes of the world).

Tough question, my favoirtes are typically because I was there, doesn't mean they are essential to most people. But also 3-27-85 and 3-28-85 (I think) Nassau Colesuem, Hershey Park '85 (Listen to that opening Music never Stopped), Saratoga 85 and 11-10-85 and 11-11-85 are some special shows (for me) off the top of my head.

There were two shows at Miami Jai Lai (sp) in 1974 - Summer....June or July...really really good, I've heard some call these better than the Barton Cornell show. I suspect that's the show Mushroom man posted, if you like that check out the other night also. That was one of the first super high quality bootlegs I ever got.

Oh, and the acoustic stuff from '71 or so. Sometimes even 3 sets to those. Monkey and Engineer, ripple, etc....mmmmm ggood.

the night before is just as good

those shows are what got me hooked on 74' Dead! Pretty much can't go wrong with anything from that year you just gotta have a good recording. The summer of 74' was an especially smokin' time period but all 73-74 is worth a listen IMO

I agree with you as well. That whole Nassau run was really hot that spring. But that one show with Branford was spectacular.

A very underrated show imho would be Long Beach 1981 . It dabbles in all walks of life of The Dead
1 set has
Lost sailor into Circumstance that will get your feet moving and your bones shakin/Shakedown/ A very very very good Wheel/ Never trust a woman(good time blues)/ drums and space of course/ Truckin and wharf rat.

Not a legendary venue , but this was a hot show. I have listened to
It for years, and thought it was just me, because it was a life changing day. Recently I have seen a couple people rediscover this one and post some SBD upon face book.

Richfield 09/04/1991.
