I think the thing about hurricanes that is most likely to cause this, compared to just a regular rain storm, is all the wind that will continue after the rain saturates everything and starts to dry the mycelia.

in the article they talk about the wind spreading spores, which obviously has nothing to do with them popping up the next day since theres no strain of mushrooms in the world that can go from spores sprouting>mushrooms in less then 1-2 weeks. However the mycelia could stay dormant in the ground for months and when conditions are right sprout more mushrooms (that goes for every kind of mushroom).

Nice fact. That probably explains why we have so many mushrooms in our yard now. We had a dry summer and then a pretty wet August
