the Grateful Dead shows I attended were mostly just the Grateful Dead
but I did see Bruce Hornsby('88),Violent Femmes('91), Steve Miller('92), Sting('93), Traffic('94) and Rusted Root('95) open big outdoor gigs
they were all good openers for the Boys I hate to pick a "Best" but I'd have to go with Traffic

I've also seen the Allman Bros. open for Phil & Phriends ( and vice - versa ! ) ('02 )

Also Ekoostik Hookah ('02 ), Deep Banana Blackout ('00 ) And Jackie Greene ('09 ) opening for Ratdog

and Hot Tuna, Rusted Root ('98 ), Ziggy Marley, and Ekoostik Hookah ('00 ) open for the Other Ones
Robert Hunter played in between sets in '02

Bob Dylan opened for the Dead in '03 with Hunter in between Dead sets ( the Bard sat in for 3 songs with the Boys too )

also Warren Haynes and The Sultans of Bing opened for the Dead in '04

For opening act's, I guess I'd be torn between Dylan, and Traffic. CSN was pretty cool too. As far sit in's, I guess nobody can beat Bruce.
But there were a lot of great ones.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.
I can't come down, I've been set free.
Who you are, and what you do,
don't make no difference to me.

This was a good one:

Grateful Dead
Oakland Auditorium Arena
1982-12-30

Etta James & Tower of Power sat in for some songs. Check out "TELL MAMA."

Traffic was awesome. Brandied was also good. Did Clapton ever sit in?

Favorite sit ins: Spencer Davis, Steve Miller
Favorie opening act: Traffic, hands down. Particularly the Giants Stadium shows when various members of the Dead came out to jam on Mr. Fantasy and Gimme Some Lovin'.
