GD Encores mid 80's

#49723 3 years ago
Why do you all think the GD only played like 5 encores in the mid 80's? IHave always been curious why there was not a bigger rotation variety.

Brokedown, US Blues, Day Job, Baby Blue, Box of Rain, Quinn

Good question. I know that in reality there were more, but it sure did seem like a limited selection. I hated the fact that I heard Baby Blue so often I almost started to groan every time it began, even though it's such a beautiful song. Never got tired of Brokedown, though!

Well, you have to include Black Muddy River, and Johnny B. Good to that list. The encore slot, is supposed to be an easy song,
that doesn't require much thought, and little exploration. And gets the band off stage efficiently. That's much more noticeable
in later years, rather than earlier. It's always different from the audience point of view. I do think, especially in later years, the
band saw the encore as an obligation. Early on, it was a more enjoyable experience. And showed in their song selection.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.

I never got timed of the encores, but after a while the third song, almost always Bobby on Slide guitar - the little red roosters, etc, got to be too much. Especially Minglewood Blues.... I'm sure they played that every three shows or so. Yeah you could scream "well the girls right here in ____ your town___ but yeash, it got to be too routine to get excited about (IMO).

I think I could listen to an entire show of just Baby Blue. Just feels like the right way to end a show.

I had a lot of "Black Muddy River", + "Touch Of Grey" on my 80's encores.

Dylan originally wrote "wanna doze" but it def sounds like Jerry always said "want a dose" in the versions I've heard

i saw revolution many many many times in 83 and 84. Never got old. I also danced a nice little jig to keep your day job quite a few times as well as Johnny B Goode.
