Bill Walton was the first true Dead Head that I ever knew of and he had me re-evaluating my interest in the Grateful Dead.

In 1974 I was a high school basketball player and at that time Bill Walton was about the biggest amateur basketball player in the country - then playing at UCLA. It was Bill who made me realize the deep influence that the Dead had on the older crowd at that time.

I remember watching a special about Bill Walton - the UCLA basketball player - and noticing that much of the broadcast focused on Bill's obsession with the Grateful Dead. Walton talked not only about how the music impacted his life, but also about how he and this whole group of Heads were touring around the country following the band.

This was the first time I ever knew that there was a 'never ending tour' going on and it was indeed in full swing then in Fall 1974 - just as the band was winding things down for the next couple years.

This singing will be on TV too late for me to watch it here back east tonight, but I am sure that someone will record it and place it on YouTube which will then make it's way here.

Cool story about Bill Walton. Last year, at the first Furthur show at MSG, he walked by me outside the venue. He's still enormous!

Oh and those statues are widely available on Ebay.
