I would say about 77- 84 or 85. They had a resurrection in 88-89, then the empire crumbled.

There is pretty mcuh a winner ... except I would say musically 73 & 74 can't be touched. My personal fave is 1985. Then 1977.

I do say the empire lasted through 1990 & 1991.......................... pretty much on life support in 92.......... a few signs of life in 93 and a last gasp fall of 94. .....

No favorite era. I like to listen to every year, and see how each song grew and changed, like a child growing up. Their music is like a living thing.

Workingman's for sure! But then again, the early Keith jazzy days were hot too.

+1. However, I do have a particular soft spot for the late 80s, too. Everyone was so healthy, the vibe was so positive and they were so willing to dip into that rich back catalog.

'73 to '77 is what I reach for when I need some top notch dead. 78, not bad.

I think in 81 is when Garcia's guitar tone changed to a super hot pick up and that changes his approach to the guitar in godo ways.

and '87-90 just are much more hard edged stuff... Brent doing blow away... intense all along the watchtowers....

That's not to say I don't love all of it (ok, well, 91 on gets lots of fast forwards...) like who doesn't love them doing Visons of Johanna? That's the balls right there... and Dear Mr. Fantasy> totally out of vocal key Hey Jude!!!!!
