I was really happy to come across this thread!
About two months ago, we adopted a starving, unwanted retired racehorse (we have three now), and after the holidays, we're going to the pound to get another dog ( who will hopefully replace our late yard dog, Lizzie, who kept the raccoons, rattlesnakes and garden-eating deer away from the house).
We've got varying numbers of barn cats, too, and the high point of my day is when I go out to feed all these critters.

I'm aware of the millions that are killed for the lack simply of space for them. Really sad. Its worse or equal to atleast the millions that have to live through years of thier entire or most of thier lives, on a chain , rarely fed, scorched and sometimes die in the sun or heat with no shade....basically that are under the wrath of terrible owners. This problem is mainly, not fully but mostly to be blamed on the laws that are not there to prevent alot of this terrible reality and everyday suffering for dogs with "homes" and not in shelters .
With stricter laws oreven just a few simple ones ....
the common house pet would be treated with atleast some respect, cause they had to legally, its sad, but its reality. If smokey the bear wernt ever born, there would of been many more forest fires from the 30's or wheneevr the bear was born, til now. (lol)

i totally support santuaries though and just giving some bumps to ya chester. Not sayin dogs in shelters arent to be loved and given energy and focus...but laws are are tad loose in most areas and simple things that can b done by an owner arent done because they dont legally "have ta."
but i definately am always prayin for dogs that may die if not found homes. Many get a second chance thanks to these kind places you have a link for.
