Dr. John recomendations....

#33506 3 years, 1 month ago
I'm going to the Vibes this year and I'm not familiar with Dr. John, a few weeks ago someone on here told me to go with his earlier stuff, was wondering if anybody has any specific album recomendations - I'll probably get 3 or 4.....

Definitely check out Gris Gris and Gumbo for two early selections- great stuff. Also check out anything you can find that's live anywhere (tapes, archive, etc). I saw him just last year and he's walking a bit slow, but can sure still funk and rock it out. He's wonderful!!

For something newer check out "Television" from '94
I has a sit in from Anthony Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the song "Shut de Fonk Up" as well as a couple of cool covers and original songs
A solid all around effort

It is a hard call making a recommendation for Dr. John because he crosses genres so much from CD to CD. I have four of his CD's and like them all, but they are all different styles. If I had to recommend, I would go with:

Television (funky Dr. John)
Duke Elegant (Dr. John plays Duke Ellington
Creole Moon (New Orleans blues)

Have fun.

Gris-Gris gets my vote. They should've included a voodoo doll with that one. Wish I could be at Bonnaroo as Dr. John is playing that whole album with the original Meters and Allen Toussaint. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as most of those people barely speak to one another from what I've heard.
