Steam Locomotive 844

#28916 3 years, 1 month ago
If anyone is interested, the steam locomotive 844 is currently touring from Nebraska to Arkansas. Its only one of two of the old beasts still operating. Its owned by Union Pacific, and they do this tour just to show it off to fans. They will be here in St Louis next week. Here's the update map from Union Pacific. If you live along the route, here's your chance.

The Garage in Coshocton where the Ohio Central Railroad is headquartered has a steam engine that they are restoring for scenic rides
The Locomotive is nowhere near the size of an 800 class though

And speaking of trains, does anyone remember the "Freedom Train"?
Back in '76 in the summer before 8th grade The Freedom Train traveled to every State in the country (except Alaska and Hawaii)
The Cars contained things from the Smithsonian, almost any piece of American History you can think of was displayed on the Train, This thread made me think of that again, it was an interesting trip to check out the Train and view the treasures inside
It seems like every kid in the country went to see the Train

I love these things for a few reasons. Beauty, art, engineering, history, sheer awesomeness.

They're just a fantastic sight.

Colorado Springs has one you can ride, up in the old mining country.

Just a thing of beauty all to itself.

Checking out some old trains will be part of my next road trip, if I can make it.

The technology amazes me.

We forget all the stuff they did.

If I remember correctly, the one on tour now is one of the third biggest ever made.

I remember the "Freedom train". It was loaded with cool stuff. Loved that.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.
