Thank god for the Bomb ?

#26172 3 years, 4 months ago
today is the 55th anniversary of the bikini atoll nuclear bomb tests
isn't it time that everyone dismantles their arsenals and does away with these things ?
all nations need to work together to do away with weapons like these and keep them out of the hands of terrorists and all the other assholes
it's funny how we haven't been hearing anything in the news about the problems in japan lately, we can't forget
no more nukes

I have wondered about why we have the bomb anymore period.

In today's world "civilian casualties" are a big P.R. problem for our country in our wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere (as they should be). "We" pride ourselves on being able to conduct a war with minimal loss of non-combatant life. "We" even go so far as to claim to put "our" own soldiers at greater risk in order to avoid/minimize the inadvertent deaths of anyone not engaged in fighting U.S. forces.

Given that this is the case, I wonder under what circumstances "we" would ever use a nuclear weapon. Example: Even if Kim Jong Il of North Korea were to launch a salvo of nukes at the west coast of the U.S. (perhaps bc someone there said he looked like a rice-filled platypus) would "we" respond by launching a volley of I.C.B.M.s at North Korea that wiped out every innocent man, woman, and child and contaminated the world's ecosystem for decades in response? I assume the answer is "no".

Therefore why have them at all? Set an example for the rest of the world and get rid of them. There is no conceivable reason to ever use them.

dropping the bomb on japan was the best decision the united states ever made. Its easy to say that it is a crime against humanity but people like to forget a few facts about that occurrence. We dropped pamphlets before telling civilians to leave. We had to drop 2 bombs before they surrendered. If we hadnt dropped the bomb we would have been forced to make a land assault on main land japan and the american casualties would have been astronomical. Japan committed several crimes against humanity in china. They used approx. 50,000 live chinese men woman and children as target practice and bayonet practice. They raped innocent chinese women and then killed them so the high command wouldnt know about it. Japanese high command was in the process of setting up military brothels with chinese women forced to be used as prostitutes. Japan would never had surrendered without the bombs being dropped.

I have heard this argument before and to the extent that mathematics defines morality you may be right. I am not a WWII historian by any means, nor was I alive at the time,so I can't speak to whether or not dropping the bombs was justified.

My question is about the continued existence of today's nuclear weapons. It is POSSIBLE that the existence and even use of hydrogen bombs was justified in the past, but is there any justifiable reasons for modern hydrogen bombs (an even more deadly technology that the bombs dropped on japan) to be in our arsenal today and tomorrow?

Today's nukes are much more deadly than the nukes of the past. I don't believe that there could ever be a just exuse for using them.
