The San Francisco Stage: From Gold Rush to Golden Spike, 1849-1869 by Misha Berson, a slim overview with lots of rare photos covering early artists of San Francisco, including Stephen Massett, an entertainer who also wrote under the name of Jeems Pipes of Pipesville. There's a series of articles about old San Francisco by Walter J. Thompson that are funny.

strange tales from a strange time

this is about 4 books into one, compilation of hunter s thompson pieces.

some early work, an entire section on his covering the presidential election of '72. his gravitation toward nixon and his thoughts on him are so fucking funny. a nice section on his travels out west, and in south america. and tons of random stuff! it's great.

if you are a thompson fan i would suggest it.

recently read "the dead" by hank harrison. anybody else read that one? thanks george for that book. lost my copy of jerrys oral biography in denver.

i love the series. i especially like his rants about pro football and the section on the Oakland raiders in vol one - i currently am reading 'legacy of ashes' by tim weiner. it is all about the CIA and many of the assassination attempts and other covert (and usually illegal) activity they engage in.

Not much reading time allotted anymore but my wife just got the fourth installment of the Giver series by Lois Lowry and I may try to read it because I enjoyed the others. I would recommend these books although they are written at sort of a younger reading level.
Wlewis: the third book in the series is called MESSENGER...
And leave it on!

I AM THE MESSENGER

It is only loosely coined a series because the connectedness between stories is minimal. My wife keeps a lot of teen fiction on hand for her 8th grade students to borrow so my recent literary exposure has been to those or I am also reading with my five year old son. Just finished "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus" which was riveting from start to finish.

I also carry around a copy of Fifty shades of Gray to help strike up conversations with "Cougars" in coffee shops and diners. You would be amazed at where this can lead. You could sit on the same side of the booth and read it together.
LOL just kidding but if I were young and single I might try this.
And leave it on!

Recommendation, Finger prints of the Gods, by Graham Hancock

On the slate for reading is Last Go Round, by Ken Kesey with Ken Babbs

Also, Darkstar an oral biography of JG, by Robert Greenfield (Awesome garage sale score from last year I forgot about!)

Any thoughts on Darkstar? Anyone here read it?
