Umbrella Man - Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie 1959
One of the most famous and enjoyable clips in the history of jazz!
Louis Armstrong encounters Dizzy Gillespie for the first time in performance in the
Fourth Timex TV show hosted by Jackie Gleason in 1959.
Louis had not much good to say about the beboppers and modernists,
but this time he certainly enjoyed playng with Dizzy in the tune Umbrella Man
From the October 28, 1970 episode of Cash's TV variety show, Armstrong sings "Crystal Chandeliers" and "Ramblin' Rose" with the band then duets with Cash on the Jimmy Rodgers classic "Blue Yodel #9." There are other, partial versions of this performance online, but this is the only complete one I've found. It's so cool to see Armstrong killing on the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, when a decade earlier they wouldn't have let him in the servant's entrance.
