I've turned more than a couple punkers and metalheads with Dark Star from Live/Dead, and they hated the GD, prog rock, and anything of the sorts before hearing it. I did pick the most appropriate situation to drop in on them, though. Patience.

for more of a mellow song i would choose the stupid version of Ripple, if someone would like to hear the jaming then ill bring out scarlet fire or china rider and if they like that just keep making it weirder

A couple of friends that are not deadheads, I have found them listing to shakedown without me being there. That says something.

I have also had success with the "Eyes" from Without a Net. That's what got my best friend to appreciate them. (No one outside of my family has a strong liking for the Dead's music unfortunately)

I went to a tiny highschool, only like 80 kids in my class and none of my friends were into the Dead at all, I turned one of my buddies on with Europe '72 and I brought another to every show I could for the last couple years. He's now a major fan, drove all the way to Red Rocks with me last fall!
