Back before GPS, they had these printed thingamajiggers with a picture of the local geography that actually had lines drawn on it with #'s to signify different roads
It even had east,west, north and south pre-set so it wouldn't confuse you UNLESS you held it upside down They were very helpful to determine the best routes to take, some even recognized toll roads.
The only problem was they were no help at all in a traffic circle, but that's another thread entirely
