I just found out what this day was all about. It commemorates the Mexican Army's victory over french forces at Puebla in 1861.
It seems that the Mexican Govt. was broke back then and couldn't pay their loans from other countries.
Spoilsport Napolean III tried to invade them and got his ass kicked

And strangely enough the holiday isn't a very big deal in Mexico, Mexican-Americans are the main celebrants.

i don't remember it being a holiday that was really celebrated much at all outside the mexican- american community, but now bars have realized they can use it to get people out in the middle of the week...

whatever, a pitcher of margaritas on the rocks sounds fine to me
