Re: Better musicians- PHISH OR GRATEFUL DEAD?

#18500 3 years, 5 months ago
I like 'em both, although I've been into the Dead much longer and prefer them over Phish.
In terms of musical ability - I think that judging musicians is an impossible task: a guitar player like Yngwie Malmsteen is far more technically proficient than (for example) Stevie Ray Vaughn, but I'll take Stevie every time because he played with more soul.
It's not like sports, where you have an obvious statistical means of judging talent, and it shouldn't be. It's art!

Mozart or Beethoven?

I love 'em both!

Better musicians? Define better.

More technically sound? I wouldn't say Dead

More moving, soulful and the undefineable "it" factor, Grateful Dead

Sorry man, I have no choice but to boo this thread. I'm tired of arrogant Phish kids taking it upon themselves to argue with me every time I end up telling them I'm not into phish. Really when it comes down to it there's absolutely no point in arguing or debating frequencies. The vibes and frequiences Phish makes just doesn't make my mind or body do anything, the Dead do. They're both way different from each other. If it's the other way around for anyone, great for them.

It's a waste of time and energy, not to mention incredibly trivial, and more often than not people get incredibly passive about it.

That said, for me, it's not a matter of musicianship for either band, but the soul they put into the music. I'll leave it at that.

phish, while all members are obviously talented, is soulless gimmicky whitebread for privileged prep school kids...and having said that they just might be more technically proficient...but....

grateful dead is genuine american down home cookin...the real deal, warts and all

I like the music Phish puts out but I am NOT a fan of going to a Phish show..Different vibe. The Dead do it for me...A Phish show reminds me of a college party...I'd prefer to just listen to them from a CD then ever go to another show
