Phoebe Snow, the distinctively voiced singer-songwriter who penned the ’70s radio staple “Poetry Man” and toured with the likes of Jackson Browne, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, and Paul Simon (she appeared on his hit “Gone at Last”), has passed away following complications from a 2010 brain hemorrhage. She was 60.

Snow’s self-titled 1974 debut was almost instantly successful, spawning the top-5 hit “Poetry Man” and earning her a 1975 Grammy nod for Best New Artist (she lost to Marvin Hamlisch). Many collaborations and several smaller successes followed, though Snow’s career was ultimately sidelined by the care required for her daughter, Valerie, born severely brain-injured in December 1975.

“Occasionally I put an album out, but I didn’t like to tour, and [the albums] didn’t get a lot of label support,” she told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2008, according to abcnews.com. “But you know what? It didn’t really matter because I got to stay home more with Valerie, and that time was precious.”

Younger audiences may know her bluesy croon best from commercial jingles—she sang the theme song for the Cosby spinoff A Different World, as well as “Celebrate the Moments of Your Life” for General Foods International Coffees, and was featured in ads for Michelob, AT&T, and Hallmark. She also appeared frequently on Howard Stern, and performed at Stern’s wedding in 2008.

Watch her below, duetting with Linda Ronstadt on Saturday Night Live in 1979:

Amazing voice..
Weird..I handn'r heard this sad news and was just posting in the poetry thread and came back to the main discussion to see this..here's the lyrics to a big hit for (Phoebe)

Poetry Man
Ooooo, ya, ya, ya, ya
Ooooo, ya
You make me laugh
'Cause your eyes they light the night
They look right through me, la, la, la
You bashful boy
You're hiding something sweet
Please give it to me, yeah, to me, ya
To me
Ooh, oh, talk to me some more
You don't have to go
You're the Poetry Man
You make things all right, ya, ya

Ooooo, ya, ya, ya, ya
Ooooo, ya
You are a genie
And all I ask for is your smile
Each time I rub the lamp, la, la, la
When I am with you
I have a giggling teen-age crush
Then I'm a sultry vamp, ya, ya
Talk to me some more
You don't have to go
You're the Poetry Man
You make things all right, ya, ya

Oooooh, ya, ya, ya
Oooooh, ya

[Musical Interlude]

Talk to me some more
You don't have to go
You're the Poetry Man
You make things all right
Ooooo, ya, ya, ya, ya
Ooooo, ya

So once again
It's time to say so long
And so recall the call of life, la, la, la
You're going home now
Home's that place somewhere you go each day
To see your wife, ya, ya, ya
To see your wife
Wooo, oooh

Talk to me some more
You don't have to go
You're the Poetry Man
You make things all right, ya
Wooo, oooh

Talk to me some more
You don't have to go
You're the Poetry Man
You make things all right
"if you don't like the news go out and make some of your own"

I believe She finally came out of retirement last year as she put everything on hold after her daughter was born with CP or something like that........well she passed away a couple of years ago and Phoebe must have felt the strength to go on and that she did, with a new album and a mini tour.
one of the songs on her new album is for and about her daughter.

Thanks for posting this. Saw her at Lilac Festival a few years back (see thread in music talk for this years line up) She had such a sweet presence and had lost her daugher within that year- talked about it some, just felt like she was sitting there singing to us from her front porch with that angelic voice...Travel on in Peace Phoebe!

We were talking about this at work. Everyone over 50 was like, what a bummer.

Everyone 40 and under was like, who?

She certainly made her mark in her day.

God bless her.

Here she is in her heyday, a Don K. Rock Concert singing a tune we can all get behind.
