Anywhere Like Heaven

When I walk along your city streets and look into your eyes,
When I see that simple sadness that upon your features lies.
If my spirit starts to sink, it comes as no surprise,
it's been a long way from anywhere like heaven to your town, this town.

Note: This probably belongs in the Less infamous Lyric Association Game thread, but after reading the poem by Allen Ginsberg above, I just couldn't get this song out of my head. Music lyrics can (sometimes) qualify as poetry, no?

I believe that music lyrics make some of the best poetry.

A breath of a poem
i write to feel free
to let my mind and heart be in sync
i write to breathe
with the air supply to breathe deep
i close my eyes when words wont come
and pull lyrics from a river
of songs unsung
i pull not from the beginning
but always from the middle
the lyrics never ending
how to close is still a riddle

An excerpt from, "Evangeline: A tale of Acadie".

By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Then followed that beautiful season.
Called by the pious Acadian peasants the summer of all saints.
Filled was the air, with a dreamy and magical light.
And the landscape, lay as if new created,
in all the freshness of childhood.
Peace seemed to reign upon earth.
And the restless heart of the ocean,
was for a moment, consoled.
All sounds were in harmony blended.
Voices of children at play,
the crowing of cocks in the farm yards,
whir of wings in the drowsy air,
and the cooing of pigeons.
All were subdued and low as the murmurs of love.
And the great sun,
looked with the eye of love,
through the golden vapors around him,
While arrayed in it's robes of russet scarlet and yellow,
bright with the sheen of the dew,
each glittering tree of the forest,
flashed like the plane tree the Persian adorned
with mantles and jewels.

.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.
I can't come down, I've been set free.
Who you are, and what you do,
don't make no difference to me.

June
By: Francis Ledwidge

The butterfly
Floats in upon the sunbeam, and the fair
Tanned face of June, the nomad gipsy, laughs
Above her widespread wares, the while she tells
The farmer's fortunes in the fields, and quaffs
The water from the spider-peopled wells.
The hedges are all drowned in green grass seas,
And bobbing poppies flare like Elmo's light,
While siren-like the pollen-stained bees
Drone in the clover depths. And up the height
The cuckoo's voice is hoarse and broke with joy.

Poppies in July (Sylvia Plath)

Little poppies, little hell flames,
Do you do no harm?

You flicker. I cannot touch you.
I put my hands among the flames. Nothing burns.

And it exhausts me to watch you
flickering like that, wrinkly and clear red, like the skin of a mouth.

A mouth just bloodied.
Little bloody skirts!

There are fumes that I cannot touch.
Where are your opiates, your nauseous capsules?

If I could bleed, or sleep!
If my mouth could marry a hurt like that!

Or your liquors seep to me, in this glass capsule,
Dulling and stilling.

But colorless. Colorless.
...was staring at the little blotch of sunshine with a special intensity, considering lying down in it.

Tell me what do you see
Purple, green, and gold,
Mountain peaks that touch the sky
Little black birds flying by

Sun setting in the west
Flowers in the east,
Calm, relaxing breeze
And forests filled with trees

Tell me what do you see
The sky starts to fade as night approaches
Animals will soon come out
The spring is ending without a doubt

Fall is coming near
Cold weather's on its way,
Flowers start to die
Birds go south, bye bye.

Tell me what do you see
Happiness, love, and beauty,
Everyone is free
Life the way it should be.

The Grace of Flowers

Gladiolas in a white vase
their magenta faces sunshine
in early morning light
streaming through a windowpane
speckled with last night raindrops
bring me to wakefulness, adoration and hope.

Another volley of blossom unfold atop their stems
assuring me that on the morrow
I shall yet have their company.

Breathing graditude
I pour cold water from a crystal pitcher
into the vase with a devout prayer
"May my life also unfold with radiance and beauty

I return the flowers to the corner of the hearth
knowing that I am ready, now,
for what the day my bring.

How to Meditate

-lights out-
fall, hands a-clasped, into instantaneous
ectasy like a shot of heroin or morphine
the gland inside my brain discharging
the good glad fluid as
i hap-down and hold all my body parts
down to a deadstop trance-healing
all my sicknesses erasing all-not
even the shred of a 'I-hope-you' or a
loony balloon left in it, but the mind
blank, serene, thoughtless. When a thought
comes a-springing from afar with its held-
forth figure of image, you spoof it out,
you spuff it off, you fake it, and
it fades, and thought never comes and
with joy you realize for the first time
'thinking is just like not thinking-
So I don't have to think
any
more'

Words Fall

Where words fall, music speaks,
But the music is the knife, and my heart is the sheet,
Writing it, it feels so wrong,
But make it loud, and make it long,
A never ending love song,
Twisted as a lie does grow,
Beautiful as the life we know,
Though the truth does not mingle down below,
Hidden from the light, it will never show.

Come Summer

Come summer life will not be like this
Dreams become really like a wood nymph's kiss
The smell of new cut hay heards the end of May
Come summer

Come summer life will not be like this
Roses burn, lover's yearn
The swallow swoops, the butterflies loop
Come summer

Come summer life will not be like this
Morning tears glisten on the cool, cool grass
To be vanquished by the fiery sun's pass
Come summer

Come summer old hearts warm anew, young ones flourish too
The chill of Winter forgotten now
Sleeping dreamily under a leafy bough
Come summer
