Men never remember, but Women never forget

Re: Poet's Corner..Post Your Favorites

Forever is a very long time. How is it that people can talk so casually about a concept that we cannot even wrap our minds around? Sometimes we have a friend and we sense that our souls are very closely connected. We know that the connection is above time and space. We know that wherever we are in our lives we will always remain friends. Even if we do not see each other for years we are able to pick up right where we left off. This is what people mean when they say friends forever.

The Arrow and the Song
By
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
"What I like best about music is when time goes away."

I had No Time to Hate, Because

by Emily Dickinson.

I had no time to hate, because
The grave would hinder me,
And life was not so ample I
Could finish enmity.

Nor had I time to love, but since
Some industry must be,
The little toil of love, I thought,
Was large enough for me.

When I was just a tiny kid,
Do you remember when,
The time you kissed my bruises,
Or cleaned by soiled chin?

You scrambled for the balls I hit,
(Short-winded more than not,)
Yet, every time we'd play a game,
You praised the "outs" I caught.

It seems like only yesterday,
You wiped away my tears,
And late at night I called your name,
To chase away my fears.

Though time has changed your handsome grip,
Your hair is snowy white,
You gait's a little slower now,
Thick glasses help your sight.

Oh, do I thirst for years gone by,
To be that growing lad,
Re-living all of the memories,
Of growing with my dad.

Teacher
bring me to heaven
or leave me alone.
Why make me work so hard
when everything's spread around
open, like forest's poison oak
turned red
empty sleepingbags hanging from
a dead branch.

-Allen Ginsberg 1974

Anywhere Like Heaven
By: James Taylor

When I walk along your city streets and look into your eyes,
When I see that simple sadness that upon your features lies.
If my spirit starts to sink, it comes as no surprise,
it's been a long way from anywhere like heaven to your town, this town.

Note: This probably belongs in the Less infamous Lyric Association Game thread, but after reading the poem by Allen Ginsberg above, I just couldn't get this song out of my head. Music lyrics can (sometimes) qualify as poetry, no?

Welcome back!
the room was dark and gloomy since you left...
If you'd leave us forever I might have a heart attack.
you're the candle..
the lit the way for me as well as the other
we didn't forget you...
or your smile or even your teaching style.
We're glad you're back!
promise we're going to be better,
promise to make you proud,
promise when you leave our class with a smile not a frown.
We're just so happy we saw you today,
please the next time don't go away.

Dedicate this one for Bobby, Welcome Back.

Cause I'm missing him tonight

If I had to pick one of us to speak for us all
He would have done the job well
Coming from some crazy angle
He'd have known which story to tell
he'd tell the truth about real music
he knew the truth long before he fell

His fingers would touch his guitar neck
My axe would be pressed to my chest
A chord and a melody would walk in the door
Closely followed by all of the rest
Magic and tragic and triumph and storm
and all the things we had sought on our quest

You get your ego out of the way of your hearts
The whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts

A sort of field pops into existence
Everything lifts off the ground
You know that you're doing what you were born to do
That you're using the gift that you've found
To create some lift and break all the chains
with which all our people are bound

he did it for all the right reasons
and made all of our mistakes
a more human man you could not find
an accelerator without the brakes
but he had the brains and the heart and the spirit
Garcia really had what it takes

David Crosby-

I've always enjoyed this poem for Jerry especially when I'm alittle down.

The Game
By: Susan Christensen

Let me tell you about a game I play
Where I close my eyes and fade away

I float away to a special place
Beyond the stars and moon and space

In this special place you see
There are only two people - just you and me

In this place, all is right
Nothing but love, and we never fight

In this place, there is no sadness
No cells, no courts, none of that madness

No rules to follow, no laws to break
No bars to hold us or separate

No one to tell us we can't kiss or touch
I don't just tell you "I love you" - I show you how much

But eventually the game must end
My eyes must open, and reality sets in

But someday soon - I'm not sure when
I will close my eyes and play my game again

...
and I heard deliverance in the bare
branches fingering a series of powerlines
in silhouette to the moon's hushed
excursion across the battered fields
of our lives, that endless night
of ricocheting fear and shame.
