Happy Birthday, Ralph, you're an American classic! This seemed to fit with Memorial Day, as well.

Concord Hymn by Ralph Waldo Emerson

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood
And fired the shot heard round the world.

The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;
And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.

On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We set today a votive stone;
That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee.

Siren Song
By: Margaret Atwood, 1976

This is the one song everyone
would like to learn: the song
that is irresistable:
the song that forces men
to leap overboard in squadrons
even though they see the beached skulls
the song nobody knows
because anyone who has heard it
is dead, and the others can't remember
Shall I tell you the secret
and if I do, will you get me
out of this bird suit?
I don't enjoy it here
squatting on this island
looking picturesque and mythical
with these two feathery maniacs,
I don't enjoy singing
this trio, fatal and valuable.
I will tell the secret to you,
to you, only to you.
Come closer. This song
is a cry for help: Help me!
Only you, only you can,
you are unique

At last. Alas
it is a boring song
but it works every time.

E.E. Cummings

since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;

wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world

my blood approves,
and kisses are a better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. don't cry
-the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids' flutter which says

we are for each other: then
laugh, leaning back in my arms
for life's not a paragraph

And death i think is no parenthesis
...was staring at the little blotch of sunshine with a special intensity, considering lying down in it.

and if
I were to say

I love you and
I do love you

and I say it
now and again

and again
would you say

parataxis
would you see

the world revolves
anew

its axis
you

Waiting

Serene, I fold my hands and wait,
Nor care for wind, nor tide, nor sea;
I rave no more 'gainst time or fate,
For lo! my own shall come to me.

I stay my haste, I make delays,
For what avails this eager pace?
I stand amid the eternal ways,
And what is mine shall know my face.

Asleep, awake, by night or day,
The friends I seek are seeking me;
No wind can drive my bark astray,
Nor change the tide of destiny.

What matter if I stand alone?
I wait with joy the coming years;
My heart shall reap where it hath sown,
And garner up its fruit of tears.

The waters know their own and draw
The brook that springs in yonder height;
So flows the good with equal law
Unto the soul of pure delight.

The stars come nightly to the sky;
The tidal wave unto the sea;
Nor time, nor space, nor deep, nor high,
Can keep my own away from me.

knocked living the hell out of me--

who found forgiveness hard because
my(as it happened)self he was

-but now that fiend and i are such
immortal friends the other's each

Dream of Peace.
Where love is heard like soft music.
And worldwide, we hope for a future,
As good as where we are now.

Peace, where people believe in enjoying life.
When music belongs to you who made it.
Across time truth has been patient,
And in peaceful woods we are truly happy.

Peace, where girls twirl in white dresses and barefeet.
Yellow roses braided into rolling waves.
The sun makes the world look fresh,
And the wind tastes like laughter.

Peace, where it's Spring year-round.
Juice drips down chins and lips are sweet.
Where fields were made for two things,
Flowers and fun for the children of the Earth.

Peace, where streams tinkled like windchimes.
Fish and birds of all colors abounded.
The forest was always bright and green,
Before fear and hate existed.

Dream of Peace.
Where love is heard like soft music.
And worldwide, we hope for a future,
As good as where we used to be.

My mother, My friend
You have given so much of yourself and still have more to share
When others closes their hearts to love you always seem to care
My mother, my friend how gracious you've shown your love to me
You give of your heart so freely for all of the world to see

A beautiful rose and petals from a flower, the root of the family tree
My mother, my friend a gift from God you mean all the world to me
There is no replacement for the unconditional love of a mother
When God formed her he broke the mold for there could never be another

You're like a Tiger in a den thats protective of her lair
The sharing of your countless love shows others that you care
We sometimes forget that a mother is a blessing from above
My mother, my friend a deep well of never ending love

Why Nobody Pets the Lion at the Zoo
By: John Ciardi

The morning the world began
The Lion growled at the man.

And I suspect the Lion might
(if he'd been closer) have tried to bite

I think that's as it aught to be
And not as it was taught to me.

I think the Lion has a right
To growl a growl and bite a bite.

And if the Lion bothered Adam
He should have growled right back at 'im.

The way to treat a Lion right
Is growl for growl and bite for bite.

True, the Lion is better fit
for biting then for being bit.

But if you look him in the eye
You'll find the Lion's rather shy.

He really wants someone to pet him.
The trouble is: His teeth wont let him.

He has a heart of gold beneath
But the Lion just can't trust his teeth.

I always wanted a happy ending... Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity.
