I just got the 1st GD lp on record store day and came to realize something awesome!

right in the center of the album is a large deity of Lord Nrshimha!

I know i've seen an image of Krishna on a wall in 710 Ashbury, and Grateful Dead had played the Mantra Rock Dance event at the FIllmore on Jan 27th, 67 that was a large discussion and Kirtan by Srila Prabhupada.

its really cool to see that back when this album was released they had some sort of affinity for Krishna Consciousness.

I wonder what ever happened to jerry's red white and blue top hat ?

I didn't know the GD played a Kirtan... My wife and I have talked about doing Kirtan in the lot. IMO it only makes sense that the GD would have Krishna consciousness. I didn't become aware of Krishna until after I was a DEADicated fan. It has just been that type of journey..
I could go on all day about the GD/Krishna/Jesus/Death/Life.....how there is a GD song for every moment in my life..blah blah blah...

my lady stood in line for an hour before they opened and got one for my while I was at work. Got herself a Dylan at Brandeis. Love record stores. Picked up a musical interpretation of literature today. Anyhow, only 3,000 copies - pretty sweet limited edition.

A friend of mine used to take the band prasadam after the shows (this is late 60's-early 70's). He is not a Deadhead though he admires Jerry. He told me that in his entire life he has *never* seen anyone take prasadam with such enthusiasm as Jerry would.

One of these devotees was listed as "Spiritual Advisor" on at least one of the albums but I can't remember his name.


note: (Prasadam is food that's first been offered to Krishna.)

The Oracle, Allen Cohen's Haight Ashbury newspaper was dripping in Eastern and Native American philosophy, packed with amazing art and quotations from these sources. I used to have some original copies and on the back of one issue was the
"In the Land of the Light" quote and a very young pic of the GD.

Reading that, you had the feeling there were some pretty deep discussions going down in the Haight after all that free love.

Seems like it comes with the culture..Alphert, Huxley, Leary, Mckenna... fits right into today
