98 subaru legacy outback--sudden poor gas mileage

#129914 2 years, 7 months ago
just recently my subaru started getting poor gas milage-up to 50-60 miles less per tank. it does not seem like a whole lot but i can tell it's using more gas than it needs. what could be wrong? i did some research of my own and i'm thinking it could be my o2 sensors on the exhaust..she's old almost at 227,000 miles but i feel as if it should still be running. anybody have this same situation?? please subaru owners past and present give me your advice here, i want to keep her running. transmission has seemed weird as of late, could have a small leak there as well.

It sounds like it needs a full on tune up and/or 200k mile service. Bad spark plugs, fuel filter, any of that stuff will result in poor performance. If the tranny needs work that will cause the engine to work harder than normal as well. Give her some love man!

Burt, I did some research as well. Denver Man's advice it good. With high miles it could be a number of things...get a tune up and see if they find anything that would attribute to the loss in MPG's.

Could be anything from new plugs to sticking brakes....and yes some times trannies need love too

Agree with everything said. Plug and plug wires will make a big diffrence. Air pressures. I had a suburau back in the ninetys best car ever but when the transmission started acting up it did a number on my engine and they died at the same time.

totally agree with Denver Man. For the cheap and easy, it could be a fuel fitler. Usually very easy to get at. Later, Glenn

That's what I was about to say.

The head gasket is the most common problem with high-mileage Subarus.

at 227k I'm surprised that you haven't already had to replace it.
Usually needs done around 100k, from what I hear.
Maybe the previous owner did it once, and now it's time for round two.

If that is what it is, expect to pay around $1k for the repair.
I guess it's a pain to replace since the repair is so costly.

Good luck!
Takin' it in stride!
