If you can't make in onboard the golden arrow, how about this $279,000 flying car? Bet you'd freak out a few freaks

www.insideline.com/car-news/terrafugias-...-york-auto-show.html

Just the Facts:

The $279,000 Terrafugia Transition street-legal airplane — a "flying car" — will make its auto show debut in April at the 2012 New York Auto Show.
The company said it selected the venue because of the potential of "exposure to future owners."
Highlights of the roll-out include "wing-folding demonstrations."

NEW YORK — Move over 2013 Nissan Altima and 2013 Buick Enclave. Traditional cars and trucks will get some competition for the spotlight from an unlikely source at the 2012 New York Auto Show: The $279,000 Terrafugia Transition street-legal airplane — literally, a "flying car."

The company said it selected the venue because of the potential of "exposure to future owners."

The New York auto show "is a venue from which we can show the first practical street-legal airplane to the world while meeting the people who will be part of its commercial success in the years to come," said Terrafugia in a statement.

Highlights of the production prototype roll-out include "wing-folding demonstrations." Terrafugia also said it will discuss details of the company's future plans.

The Transition was cleared for road use last July by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, although the airplane is required to take off and land at an airport. It is the first combined flying-driving vehicle to be granted exemptions by NHTSA.

The company says consumers can reserve the Transition with a $10,000 refundable deposit.

The Transition's standard equipment includes electro-mechanical folding wings, a continuously variable transmission and rearview camera system. It also features a golf-club storage compartment, panoramic moonroof and aluminum alloy wheels. Options include air conditioning and auto pilot.

Terrafugia reports that the Transition is expected to return 35 mpg on the road.

Inside Line says: A first step toward auto shows morphing into "mobility" shows.
