Stop. Think. Be Informed. Have Fun. other than that i'd say it's open season unless you are going into somewhere remote or possibly where there might be natural dangers...like heat, snow, or animals. And where ever you end up talk to locals and take time to travel off the beaten path. A good road side emergency kit is invaluable and so are smell proof containers and good hiding spots! As well as clean boxers and socks.

LOL, i wonder if anybody has written a handbook yet...

so much brother. but it's sort of like a thing you just go through. no one can tell you how to tour. if i learned anything on tour, it's that we're all different, and we've all got our own different things we do on the road. there are different ways to do it. every time i went back on the next tour, i had a whole brain full of new approaches/ideas/ways/you name it. did i use them all? no. some things work, some don't.

make sure your car is not a piece of shit. get the entire thing checked out by a professional.

are you going solo?

who are you following?
who else is gonna bring you, a broken arrow?

Keep yourself open to new experiences and expect the unexpected.

not to mention traveling stealth if going into states that are not welcoming to your lifestyle. a little precaution can go a long way because at night in a rest stop on some state highway in a state not friendly with tie-dye, ganja, and out of state travelers a nosy police officer can make a world of trouble for a peaceful traveler who smells like illicit substances or exudes the notion that they may have 'drugs' on them.

Yes. At all times, take care on that count.

All good advice above, and I'll throw back in the "Be Careful!" as well. Always better to avoid trouble in the first place than have to get out of it later. Have fun, enjoy it all, and think about keeping a written journal. You'd be amazed how many details about "unforgettable" experiences you actually end up forgetting over the years. Safe travels, and may there be a Furthur tour as one of your options!!

Listen to the advice of older heads. They are wise, and most importantly, they really only want you to enjoy the experience.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.
I can't come down, I've been set free.
Who you are, and what you do,
don't make no difference to me.
