For just sheer intensity gotta go with Buddy Rich, but let's not forget about the great Gene Krupa. Also surprised no one mentioned Neil Pert. Picked up his book Ghostrider at the library close to 10 years ago now, and I honestly didn't realize who the author was until I stared reading it, but man what an intense book. That guy went through some tragedies in his life, well if you like his music at all, pick up that book.
