Busted Down on Bourbon Street

#117677 2 years, 6 months ago
42 years ago today members of the Grateful Dead were arrested in New Orleans After playing a set earlier in the evening, the band's hotel was raided by local police. Nearly 20 people were eventually charged with drug violations related to the raid. After posting bail money, the Dead were almost out of funds. They added another show in New Orleans for the following night and persuaded Fleetwood Mac, who was appearing with them, to stay for another show as well. At the gig, a bucket was passed around the audience to collect some additional cash. Most of the charges from the New Orleans bust were eventually dropped. Here is Jerry's version of what went down.

I say this is an anniversary that must be celebrated! Everyone needs to do their best to
try and violate some drug laws today. Do it for Jerry and the boys!!

The trouble continued that night at The Warehouse. Phil's amp failed during the first set forcing the band to do an acoustic second set altough Jerry played electric guitar for some of the set. The unscheduled acoustic set boasts the first "Saw Mill" and first "Katie Mae" and the only time they played "Bound In Memories"

I forget who, but a member of fleetwood mac wrote a wonderful memorial on Bear Owsley and in it went into great detail about the bust and being admitted into the hippy music scene. not sure where I read it... but it's a great read...
