For Ecojaded and his Family

As day passes into night
The shadow of a great oak sweeps across a field of wheat
We see it's broad trunk and we feel strength
As day passes into night
There is a coolness in the air but we see the outstretched branches
And we are warmed by it's loving embrace

The thick, brown bark has greyed and softened
Leaves are brittle and dry
Roots are gnarled and raised
It's venerable presence is a fixture on the horizon
The grand old oak is a measure of all our lives
When it is felled, the absence of its greatness
Competes with the greatness of its absence

Grandpa has gone to heaven, ripping a hole in our world
With calloused hands, he rubbed our worried brow.
With broad shoulders he carried the burdens of all the children that needed to be lifted
With thick fingers he pointed the way for the lost, the lonely and the unloved
He shaped us to grow straight and tall
To reach for the light of the sun and to sway gently as the storm clouds gathered
He showed us courage in the face of our fears
When we could no longer see his silhouette
As day passed slowly into night.

Now I'm missing my Grandfather. It will be 25 years this june, since his passing. He built a beautiful house with his own hands.
And there was a majestic oak right by it. It was old when he built the house. And it's still there. And now I own that house.
Thank you for that DC. It is beautiful.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.
I can't come down, I've been set free.
Who you are, and what you do,
don't make no difference to me.
