I'm partial to 1980 Scarlet Fires, mainly because the Fires are so friggin good that year. However the 2 songs together were rarely more than 20 minutes total. But as mentioned, length doesn't always matter hahaha

Fox Theatre been mentioned? So amazingly good (especially the transition from S to F):
Grateful Dead Live at Fox Theater on 1980-11-30

Not that it was the longest or the bestest but a really cool one that comes to mind is the one in Jamaica. Never saw one at sunrise before. I just loved the jam in between the Scarlet and Fire, Jerry held back the first notes of Fire till the sun shone it's first rays over the mountain backdrop. Got great pictures! The one above 3/22/90 is one of my favs. also.

Although Help>Slip>Frank, a close second I'm thinking the Scarlet>Fire is my favorite combo. This 11-30-80 is the goods, I think this recording a bit better than the link provided previously:

The Dead Projects site is down? hmmm well I have the list from this site Heady Version: headyversion.com/song/315/grateful-dead/...ire-on-the-mountain/

Can't wait to hear the one on the new Dave's Picks, from 5/25/77. And I just heard the one from Portland 10/2/77 which was no snoozer, albeit 22 minutes.

[quote="patchmyfurthur" post=117757]The Dead Projects site is down? [quote]

Looks like it's up. Here is their Top 10 (with my notes):

5/8/77 - Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY > ummmm.....no. Honorable mention for me.

4/24/78 - Horton Field House, IL. Univ., Normal, IL > listen to Booby play lead on Fire. Very good > Bobby Weirs best ever!

9/2/78 - Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ > One of the best transitions to Fire (along with FOX 11/30/80)

2/3/79 - Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, IN > Beautiful sound. My favorite Scarlett ever. Fire has Reggae tones.

11/1/79 - Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, NY > 39 minute Scarlett Fire!!! Scarlett just goes + goes...rings on her fingers and chicken on her shoes?!?

2/27/81 - Uptown Theatre, Chicago, IL > good but overrated. Jerry is too into the Turkish. Great Source/Sound.

7/31/82 - Manor Downs, Austin, TX - SBD > This is the real deal and belongs in the top 10!!!

4/23/83 - Veterans Memorial Coliseum, New Haven, CT > 2nd Best Scarlet fire....for 1983!

6/18/83 - Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga, NY > Another real deal > Top 10 material. Sorry if you are an '83 hater.

3/22/90 - Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada > I saw it but didn't remember much. After listening to it again, it is a freaking monster. Top 10....um.....maybe.

You can't go wrong with any of these. Some other ones to mention are:

10.2.77 -- 10.10.80 -- 3.22.87 -- 7.7.89 -- 6.7.91 -- 9.4.91 (personal entry)
If anybody wants versions of ANY mentioned, PM me.

This sight is fun and interesting, but I take serious issue with the contention that almost nothing good came after 1978. Depending on the song, most TOP versions are pre-1977. If you* cannot find TOP versions of those songs in the 1980s and 1990s then you simply are not listening to enough from that era, and thus, limiting yourself in a big way.

But I guess that is a debate worthy of its own thread.

*(Not YOU specifically, but in general, mind you).

This really isn't accurate. Leaving out Dark Star & Other One as having lists for those songs featuring post 78 material are the ones that should be ignored and Eleven(No post-78), Love Light(No worthy post-78), Lost Sailor> Saint(No pre-79), & Here Comes Sunshine(All best in 1973)...leaving them out there are 15 "best of xxxx" projects, with a top 10 & 5 honorable mentions in each. That's 225 total song versions 91/225(40.4.%) are from 1979-1995, 113/225(50.2%) are from 1978-1995. Additionally, their Top 100 Shows off the Beaten Path project is broken down into time periods with 20 from 79-86, 15 from 87-90, and 10 from 91-95...making 45/100 from 79-95. There can't be anyone who would seriously suggest 65-78 doesn't warrant at least 55/100 on a top 100 list.

1982 and 1994

Dont knock the 1994. Like I mentioned in another thread about the last years, this is a nugget.

Manor down is just awesome all the way around.

That 94 fire is on fire, great fucking version.

Gonna add another vote for Manor Downs. That one has been my fav since...............1982, so going on 31 years.

But also gotta add two more not found so far on the list from 1981:

1. MSG 3-10-81. Had this as an Aud tape. Nice slow pace that really grooves.

archive.org/details/gd1981-03-10.sbd-set2.miller.91764.flac16

2. Greek Theater 9-12-81. A bit faster and again, great groove.
