A Winter's Day

#113357 2 years, 9 months ago
The late afternoon sun creates peach colored shapes on the snow. The slight tilting of the earth, back towards the south, has allowed patches of illumination to reach the narrow backyard. Living in the shadows of garages, houses and grand old oak and maple trees, this strip of real estate is again seeing direct daylight. The dogs can sense it when they gallop back and forth in a mock hunt of an imagined prey. The promise of spring begins on the first day of winter. Our coldest month is always pointed towards warmth, our darkest fears towards hope, our greatest worries, calm and our biggest lies, truth. A Midwestern winter is where you find your inner strength. You clear the walk, brush the car, wash your salty shoes and dry your damp gloves and socks, knowing tomorrow you'll have to do it all over again. Motoring requires even more cooperation from the increasing numbers of distracted drivers. Someone has left the door wide open, again. But the storm has stopped for now. Work and play resume. The trampled grass in the backyard is hidden under a foot of snow and the days are steadily getting that much longer.

Nice.
"Got any nails?"
"No!"
"Got any flies?"
