When anxiety sits on your chest like an elephant
When it constricts you like a Boa
Wrapping tighter with each exhale
When the void in your belly feels like a black hole
And your muscles clench and harden
In painful, fitful knots
When the sweat on your palms makes you lose your grip
On all that is familiar and comfortable
As, helplessly, you watch it slip away
Watch the waves crash slowly into rocks
As a seagull turns into the wind
Its graceful wingspan flooded in sunlight
Before its urgent dive into the bubbling waters.
See the glow of the candle
And the swirling incense smoke rise
Revealing portraits of those you love
Where guitars play a major seventh sustained
And voices sooth with humble sincerity.
You have been through the battle
And returned as a warrior
You are strong and you are tempered
You have seen the enemy, real and imagined
And you have charged him head on.
When you refuse to surrender
Against surmounting odds
And refuse to apologize
For who you are
And who you've become
You have placed mind over matter
Hope over fear
And courage over weakness
When you have done all these things
You will be, completely and eternally, at peace.
