Maybe. My understanding is there's some sore issues over Phil and Bobby launching Furthur.

Yeah. I don't think there's going to be any impromptu drop ins at the Beacon. However,
that doesn't rule out a reunion tour, or special show later this year or next.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.
I can't come down, I've been set free.
Who you are, and what you do,

Kreutzmann Takes a Stab at Furthur

Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann—who’s currently touring with his band 7 Walkers—shared his thoughts on Furthur in a story by The Press Republican that was released today.

“I haven’t really got much interest in them. They sound just like the other bands out there doing it. What do you call those bands that copy other bands—” Kreutzmann said. “Anyways, I don’t feel they’re doing anything really new with their music.”

Kreutzmann went on to say, “The saddest thing is that they (Furthur) hired a guitar player that’s not Warren Haynes. It’s too bad. They should have hired a great solo guitar player.”

The drummer last made his rounds with former GD bandmates Bob Weir and Phil Lesh—and guitarist Warren Haynes—in 2009 as The Dead. Furthur, which consists of Lesh and Weir, plus newcomers John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra) and drummer Joe Russo (Benevento/Russo Duo), formed and began touring that same year.

7 Walkers will next play on December 9 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT, while Furthur will ring in the New Year at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

I remember reading this and thinking it a major bummer. What's it called when the grateful dead played covers from their inception and then continued with new material throughout their career along with new covers? Oh grateful dead music. What's it called when Furthur plays a bunch of covers at their beginning and then writes some new music? A bummer?!....thanks bill ....sounds like he's more pissy at Joe Russo to me! Doesn't 7 walkers play dead tunes and covers as well? Uh?

kreutzmann couldn't come off as anymore of a douche bag than he does in that brief interview.

regardless, he's entitled to his opinion. i think it's funny he makes the cover band comment, or should i say, alluded to the cover band idea. when the grateful dead started, they were doing covers, and their repertoire was always heavy with cover tunes. sure they eventually found their own sound but to make that comment of him is plain ignorant to the grateful dead beginnings.

the warren haynes comment is over the top. it's "sad" that warren was not hired? did he ever think warren doesn't want to do it? or that maybe phil and bob aren't down with it? or maybe the overwhelming number of fans who complained about warren in 2009. sure phil loves to play with warren but i think he's learned when and where. for me, listening to warren sit in with furthur in march, it was so obvious who the better candidate for the furthur project was.

don't get me wrong i love bill and i love warren both excellent musicians. to me those words from kreutzmann are filled with tension and anger, and not what he really meant. he was probably pissed off that the reporter even brought it up.

from my understanding, the rhythm devils had an opportunity to be in the furthur project at the outset, and decided against it. there is no fact in that statement.
who else is gonna bring you, a broken arrow?

Please re read the article, it has nothing to do with Joe Russo.

I could see some sit-ins in the future at festivals where everyone is playing. Now that would be a festival: 7 Walkers, Mickey Hart Band, And Furthur! Add artists from there Build it And he Will come whispers the corn.....

Please re read my post, I was making a blatant assumption because he didn't get "chosen" for the drummer slot. The Joe Russo comment therefore was obviously a tongue in cheek joke not a comment on the content of the article.
